Cantante y actriz estadounidense. Cantó en clubes nocturnos antes de actuar en Broadway en el musical I Can Get It for You Wholesale (1962). Se convirtió en una gran estrella con Funny Girl (1964; película y premio de la Academia, 1968). Su rico timbre y hermosa voz la convirtieron en una de las cantantes más populares del mundo en las décadas de 1970 y 1980. Prolija actriz cómica y dramática, protagonizó películas como Hello, Dolly! (1969), ¿Qué me pasa, doctor? (1972), Tal como éramos (1973) y Nace una estrella (1976), y posteriormente dirigió y protagonizó Yentl (1983), El príncipe de la mareas (1991) y El amor tiene dos caras (1996). Durante varios años evitó presentarse en vivo, pero en la década de 1990 realizó una serie de conciertos que superaron todos los récords de taquilla. En 1995 recibió un premio Grammy por los logros de su carrera. Entre sus últimas películas como actriz se cuenta Los padres de él (2004).
